Airports handle 63% more passengers in August, not back to 2019 levels

"In August 2022, national airports handled 6.3 million passengers and 19,100 tonnes of cargo and mail," announced Statistics Portugal this Monday.

Portugal’s airports handled 6.3 million passengers in August, an increase of 63.1% compared to the same month of 2021 but still 1.9% lower compared to August 2019, according to data from INE, released on Monday.

“In August 2022, national airports handled 6.3 million passengers and 19,100 tonnes of cargo and mail, corresponding to year-on-year variations of +63.1% and +18.6%, respectively (+122.5% and +20% in July, in the same order),” said Statistics Portugal (INE), in the rapid statistics of air transport for August.

Compared to August 2019, the best national tourist year and before the pandemic that severely affected aviation, passenger movement decreased by 1.9% and cargo and mail movement increased by 12.5% (-1.5% and +7.6% in the previous month, respectively).

In the month under review, the average daily disembarkation of 99,400 passengers was recorded at national airports, compared with 104,300 in the previous month, approaching the value observed in August 2019 (101,300).

Between January and August 2022, the number of passengers handled increased by 203.3%, compared to the same period in 2021, but decreased by 9.3% compared to the same period in 2019.
