Tourist accommodation sector with a record 3.4 million guests in August

Lisbon and Albufeira accounted for 27.1% of the total overnight stays in Portugal and 32.9% of the overnight stays by non-residents.

Portugal’s tourist accommodation sector reported a total of 3.4 million guests and 9.9 million overnight stays in August, the highest monthly values since records exist, according to a statement released by Statistics Portugal (INE) this Friday.

“The tourist accommodation sector registered 3.4 million guests and 9.9 million overnight stays in August 2022, the highest monthly values since records exist, corresponding to increases of 33.0% and 31.9%, respectively (+85.4% and +90.0% in July, in the same order),” refers INE. Compared to August 2019, the number of guests and overnight stays increased by 1.2% and 2.8%.

The statistics office also revealed that the total revenue increased to €797.0 million (+53.6%), and the revenue from accommodation amounted to €639.0 million (+54.9%). When compared to the same month in 2019, “there were increases of 24.9% and 25.7% in total revenue and revenue from accommodation, respectively.”

The bed occupancy rate stood at 68.3% in August, increasing by 10.6 p.p. compared to the previous month but slightly lower than the 68.7% registered in August 2019.
