Opposition party calls for high-rise buildings in Lisbon for housing

The leader of Portugal’s right-wing CDS-PP (People’s Party), Assunção Cristas, has called for high-rise housing to be built in neighbourhoods outside central Lisbon, such as Alcântara and Marvila, to increase the supply of housing.
During an initiative called ‘Hear Lisbon’ organised Lisbon’s Palácio Galveias central library on Wednesday night, Cristas said she saw no problem in building high-rise buildings outside of historical neighbourhoods and on land that is unoccupied.
House prices and rents have been rising steeply in recent months, particularly in Lisbon and Porto, in part because of strong demand from foreign buyers and properties being withdrawn from the long-term rental market to be used for more lucrative tourist lets.
Portugal’s Socialist government has been working on a set of new measures aimed at increasing the number of homes available at affordable prices to be included in the 2019 state budget.
