During the week of the 2017 State Budget delivery, the President asks for budgetary discipline, but such does not suffice. Tax stability and more growth are needed.

“Focus on tax stability” is what Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the President of Portugal, asked for during the week the Government will deliver the draft for the 2017 State Budget. The President advocates its importance “in terms of investment”, since this is one of the challenges Portugal must overcome in order to recover economic growth and meet social justice.

ECO challenged the President to name the main priorities he would like to see written in the document. Marcelo stressed, from the beginning, the importance of “continuing to keep the budgetary discipline for this year and the following”. This is “The first challenge”, Marcelo argues.

In order to understand this discipline, the President explains the balance needed “between considerable expenditure restraint and a focus on tax stability, which is a very important type of stability in terms of investment”.

Besides budgetary discipline, Marcelo argues there are three other concerns: “social justice, economic growth and job creation”.

In order to understand these priorities, the President argues the importance of “promoting exports and having the trust necessary to have more internal and external investment”. This brings us back to the beginning: in order to have investment, tax stability and budgetary discipline are essential.
