In June, there was a movement of 318.2 thousand passengers at Portuguese airports, representing a decrease of 94.6% compared to last year.

318,200 passengers passed through Portuguese airports in June, representing a decrease of 94.6% compared with the same period a year ago, says the National Institute of Statistics (INE), in the Air Transport Flash Statistics, released this Monday.

The decrease was also seen in the movement of freight and mail, which decreased 54.1%, as well as in the number of commercial aircrafts landed at national airports, which fell 86%, totalling 3,000, according to INE.

The drop registered in June was already lower than that registered in May (98.5%). Still, in the second quarter of the year, the most critical time of the pandemic, the decrease in the number of passengers handled at national airports was 97.4%.

In the first half of the year, 9.9 million passengers were handled, which translates into a fall of 64.5%. Among the largest in the country, Faro airport, located in one of the most touristic regions of Portugal, registered the largest decrease, of almost 80%.

France was the main country of origin and destination of passengers at national airports until June. However, there are still negative variations in the number of passengers to and from France, which is around 65% in H1 2020, compared to the same period last year.
