Investment in mutual funds decreased in the third quarter, compared to the first semester of 2018. Private individuals remain as the main investors in investment funds, holding 43% of the total units.

The total net value of investment units in Portuguese mutual funds decreased by €0.4 billion to € 26.1 billion at the end of the third quarter compared with the end of June, the Bank of Portugal said on Thursday.

According to statistics from the central bank on the activity of investment funds, this reduction in activity was mainly due to a drop in investments in deposits, of about €0.2 billion.

In addition, there was a drop in non-financial assets of €0.1 billion resulting from the sale of real estate and a decrease in the same amount of investment in units issued by foreign funds.

According to the central bank, private individuals remained “the main investor sector” in investment funds, holding about 43% of the total units in circulation at the end of September 2018, with the amount invested in the third quarter of 2018 decreasing by €0.3 billion.
