Portugal is the best golf destination in the world for the third time
Portugal was voted on November 12 the world’s best golf destination for the third time consecutive, receiving the award from the World Golf Awards, which gives the ‘oscars’ for the sport category.
In a ceremony at Conrad Algarve, in Quinta do Lago, Portugal has once again outdone destinations such as England, Scotland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Wales, France, Germany, Spain, Turkey or Italy, competing for the same title.
“Portugal will continue to work towards bringing in new segments to golf courses [corporations, women, teaching professionals and young people] and it will continue to support this benchmark event: the Portugal Masters, already scheduled for September 21 to 24, 2017”, highlighted Luís Araújo, the president of Turismo de Portugal.
Currently, there are 91 golf courses in Portugal, from which 66 have 18 or 27 holes. The Algarve is the region in Portugal where more golf courses can be found (44%), having Lisbon as the second largest region (17.58%).
According to the organizers, the World Golf Awards “aim to stimulate the touristic golf industry and come from an online voting made by professionals from the sector, from specialized tourist operators and from media working with the golf industry, but also from the generalized public”.
