Lisbon has entered the largest European airports’ group

Lisbon has moved 26.7 million passengers in 2017 and is now a part of the group of the largest European airports. According to the news disclosed by the Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Negócios this Monday, the Humberto Delgado airport (Lisbon) has entered what is called the group 1, of airports that move more than 25 million passengers, from Airports Council International, the entity representing airports from all over the world.

These data come from Vinci, the company that manages Portuguese airports, and were disclosed last Friday. According to the French company, for the first time in history, the ten Portuguese airports surpassed, last year, the 50 million passengers’ threshold. All in all, 51.8 million passengers traveled in all Portuguese airports, which represents a 16.5% increase in comparison to 2016, or an additional seven million passengers.

All airports registered records in their volume per year, but Lisbon was responsible for more than half of this national increase. The capital city airport ended 2017 with a total of 26.7 million passengers moved, 18.8% more than in 2016, or an additional four million passengers.

Because the Lisbon airport surpassed the 25 million passengers’ threshold, Lisbon is now in the same group than airports from Paris (Charles de Gaulle), London (Heathrow), Barcelona, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Moscow or Amsterdam. Until now, Lisbon stood in the Airports Council International group 2, of airports that move between 10 and 25 million passengers.

As for Oporto, it surpassed the ten million passengers’ threshold for the first time — with a 15% increase, to 10.7 million passengers in 2017 — and is now a part of the group 2 of the largest airports.
