Four Portuguese companies get highest score in world environmental ranking
EDP, Jerónimo Martins, Nos and The Navigator Company were the only Portuguese companies to achieve at least a maximum score worldwide in the ranking that assessed 15 thousand companies.
Around 150 European companies were awarded the top mark by CDP – Disclosure Insight Action for their transparency and environmental action. Among them are four Portuguese companies: EDP, Jerónimo Martins, Nos and The Navigator Company.
Portuguese energy, retail, telecommunications, and paper giants are on CDP’s annual “A” list. It’s a ranking released earlier this month by the global non-profit platform, founded in 2020, which manages the world’s environmental disclosure system for companies, cities, states and regions.
15,000 companies worldwide were evaluated, which were assigned a rating from “A” (highest) to “D- “(lowest) for the efficiency with which they act regarding risk management (associated with climate, forest or water), while those that do not disclose or provide insufficient information are classified with an “F” score.
CDP holds the largest environmental database in the world, and this year scored nearly 15,000 companies on their climate change, forests and water security disclosures. Its scoring “measures the comprehensiveness of disclosure, awareness and management of environmental risks and best practices associated with environmental leadership, such as setting ambitious and meaningful targets.”
Regarding the fight against climate change, the four companies got the maximum score (“A”), something that does not occur in the second pillar, dedicated to forests, a category where only Jerónimo Martins and The Navigator Company scored, despite not obtaining the highest score, ending up with an “A-“.
As far as water safety is concerned, only Jerónimo Martins and the EDP achieved the maximum distinction, “A”.
None of the four companies achieved a triple “A” in the eyes of CDP, and according to the ranking, only 12 companies worldwide have achieved the feat: Beiersdorf, Danone, Firmenich, HP, Kao Corporation, Klabin, Lenzing, L’Oréal, LVMH, Metsä Board, Philip Morris and UPM-Kymmene.
Despite the distinction given to the four national companies, it is the United Kingdom that takes the title of the country with the most top distinctions, awarded to a total of 29 companies, followed by France (24 companies), Spain (17) and Germany (15).
Only 2.2% of all companies scored made the CDP “A” list, while 59% were scored between “C” and “D-“.
