National airports continue to handle fewer passengers than in 2019

Statistics Portugal (INE) reveals this Tuesday that the number of passengers at Portuguese airports remains 1.5% below 2019 levels.

The number of passengers at national airports remains 1.5% below 2019 levels, reveals Statistics Portugal (INE) this Tuesday. The trend is also seen in other means of transport.

“In the 3rd quarter of 2022, national airports handled 18,5 million passengers, corresponding to an increase of 79.4% compared to the same period of 2021.” However, “compared to the Q3 2019, there was a decrease of 1.5%,” says INE.

Regarding other means of transport, in the third quarter of this year, “44,6 million passengers were transported by train and 54,8 million by metro (+35.9% and +50.8%, respectively, in comparison to the same period of 2021). Compared to the same period of 2019, there were decreases of 3.2% and 15.5%, respectively”. The transport of passengers by inland waterways rose by 24.7% compared to Q3 2021 and declined by 16.0% compared to Q3 2019.

INE also gives data on freight transport, which shows a growth in this category by air and sea compared to 2021 and 2019. As for rail, there was a decrease of 10.7% (-2.1% in the previous quarter and -1.5% compared to the same period in 2019), while transport by road continued to decline (-3.3% compared to 2021 and -6.5% compared to 2019).
