Porto Santo, Madeira airports register 134% more passengers 9M22 YoY

In the third quarter of this year, passenger movements in the two airports of the region were around 1.288 million, which corresponds to a positive year-on-year variation of 49.2%.

The airports of Madeira and Porto Santo registered 3.062 million passengers between January and September 2022, the regional statistics office (DREM) said on Friday, explaining it was a year-on-year increase of 134%.

In the third quarter of this year, passenger movements in the two airports of the region were around 1.288 million, which corresponds to a positive year-on-year variation of 49.2%.

With regard to air cargo, the DREM reports that there was a “slight decrease of 0.9%” in the third quarter, indicating that goods unloaded increased in year-on-year terms by 14.1% (+10.7% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2019), but goods loaded reduced by 24.8% (-42.5% compared to the same period of 2019).

Regarding maritime transport, the regional authority notes the entry, in the first nine months of 2022, of 193 cruise ships in the region’s ports (only five in the same period last year).

“If compared with the same period of the last pre-pandemic year (2019), there were 28 more ships that called at the ports of the region,” DREM says, clarifying that despite this positive trend in the number of calls, the number of transit passengers (190,262) is little more than half (54.6%) of those counted in the same period of 2019.

In the first nine months of this year, the port of Funchal received 187,712 transit passengers, the vast majority (89.2%) were Europeans, with the predominant nationalities being German (40.6% of the total; -49.4% than in the same period of 2019), British (39.6% of the total; -26.5% than in the same period of 2019), Italian (2.3% of the total; -63.7% than in the first nine months of 2019), French (1.1% of the total; -71.5% than in the same period of 2019) and Austrian (share of 0.9%; -69.9% than in the same period of 2019).

According to the DREM, on the Madeira-Porto Santo ferry line, the number of passengers, in the third quarter of this year, increased by 8.7% compared to the same quarter of 2021, and is also higher than the 2019 figures (+4.3%).

In cumulative terms, in the first nine months, the number of passengers carried was 268,500, a figure above that recorded in the same period of the previous year (+36.7%; -8.4% compared to the same period of 2019).

Regarding the movement of goods, the variation was positive in the third quarter of 2022 compared to the previous year (+9.2%).

On the other hand, from January to September this year, 1,693 recreational boats entered the marinas in the region, representing an increase of 37.8% compared to the same period last year, and 3,328 crew members and passengers were counted, +44.4% than in the same period last year.
