Record 3.4M guests in tourism lodgings in August, 9.9M overnight stays

Compared to the August of 2019, which at that point had been the best year for tourism ever, the number of guests in 2022 was up 1.2% and overnight stays by 2.8%.

Tourism accommodation in Portugal recorded 3.4 million guests and 9.9 million overnight stays in August of this year – the highest monthly figures since records began, corresponding to year-on-year growth of 33% and 31.9% respectively, according to Statistics Portugal (INE) in a release on Friday.

“In August 2022, the tourist accommodation sector recorded 3.4 million guests and 9.9 million overnight stays, the highest monthly values since there is record, corresponding to growths of 33.0% and 31.9%, respectively (+85.4% and +90% in July, in the same order),” reads the release, which contains flash estimates for tourism activity for August.

Compared to the August of 2019, which at that point had been the best year for tourism ever, the number of guests this year was up 1.2% and overnight stays by 2.8%.

Tourism activity slumped in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and made only a partial recovery in 2021.
