The Porto City Council will propose to the Municipal Assembly a restriction on new local accommodation registrations to be in force for six months.

In a trend already seen in Lisbon, Porto also wants to suspend new local accommodation registrations. The Porto City Council will propose to the Municipal Assembly that the measure, which has yet to be approved, be applied for six months in the Historical Centre and Bonfim, according to the Jornal de Notícias this Tuesday.

The Porto municipality is studying the legal framework of the measure to take it to the Municipal Assembly on Monday. The aim is to enforce this measure as soon as it is approved.

In this proposal, the need for “areas of containment to the growth of accommodation” is mentioned, and there is the intention to “in the near future, approve a municipal regulation for the sustainable growth of local accommodation”. Although the sector’s size is not the same as in other European cities, the municipality stresses the need for balanced growth based on a “ratio of new licences for local accommodation concerning housing accommodation”.
