‘Any decision, no matter how bad, is better than a non-decision,’ says Marcelo on new airport

The president of Portugal once again stressed the need for a decision on the location for the new Lisbon airport, noting that this is a “crucial problem” that “concerns” him and the tourism sector. “It is inconceivable to reach the end of this second mandate without a decision on the airport,” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said.

The head of state was speaking this Friday during the 32nd Hospitality and Tourism Congress, in Albufeira, where he took the opportunity to touch on the subject of air accessibility, stressing the importance that this “crucial problem” has for the recovery of tourism. “[The problem] of air accessibility existed before the pandemic and continues to exist. Let those who thought that the pandemic had put it off, be disappointed,” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa explained.

Emphasising that “there is not all the time in the world”, the country’s president said it was “inconceivable” to end this second term without a decision on this infrastructure, adding that “any decision, no matter how bad, is better than a non-decision.”

At the end of his speech, Marcelo also mentioned that “it is not possible to have a government that decides one thing and another that tries to define a different solution”. “What is certainly mediocre is to postpone what has to be decided, which is a problem of Portuguese society, of all of us,” he concluded.
