SEF Police powers will be transferred to the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Public Security Police (PSP) and the Judiciary Police (PJ).

The extinction of Portugal’s Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) was this Friday approved in parliament with the votes in favour of the Socialist Party (PS), the Left Bloc (BE) and Joacine Katar Moreira.

The final text presented by the Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees on the government’s proposal to restructure the Portuguese border control system, reformulating the regime of the forces and services that exercise the activity of internal security, was voted against by the PSD, PCP, CDS-PP, PAN, PEV, Chega, Iniciativa Liberal and MP Cristina Rodrigues.

The proposal, which was agreed between the PS and BE, abolishes the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) and its police powers will be transferred to the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Public Security Police (PSP) and the Judiciary Police (PJ). At last, a Portuguese Agency for Migration and Asylum (APMS) will also be created.
