"This month of September is a great month and the holiday on October 5 has led to a large number of hotel reservations on Porto Santo and Madeira," the president of the Madeira government said.

The president of the Madeira government on Friday said that the main regional economic sector, tourism, is recovering well from the crisis caused by the pandemic, with 90% of hotels in operation and good occupancy rates.

“This month of September is a great month and the holiday on October 5 has led to a large number of hotel reservations on Porto Santo and Madeira”.

Miguel Albuquerque said that the regional government will analyse the situation of the tourism sector in October and November, considering that recovery is underway.

Asked about the possibility of easing the restrictive measures in place in Madeira, he said that the situation would be assessed after the Flower Festival, from October 1 to 24, at the same time as the Wine Festival.

He said that the region, at the moment, is not in a position to take impromptu measures and stressed that the authorities have always acted with consideration, common sense and with concrete data.

“At this moment we are containing the pandemic,” he said.

According to data released on Thursday by the regional health authority, Madeira has reported 14 new cases of Covid-19 and 16 more recovered patients, currently recording 81 active situations and five people hospitalised.
