Unemployment up on last year, down on last quarter

Unemployment fell again. Between April and June, the unemployment rate "was estimated at 6.7%, 0.4 percentage points (p.p.) lower than in the previous quarter."

The unemployment rate for the second quarter of this year “was estimated at 6.7%, 0.4 percentage points (p.p.) lower than in the previous quarter,” but increased by 1 p.p. year-on-year, according to Statistics Portugal (INE).

According to the employment statistics for the second quarter of 2021, published today by INE, “the unemployment rate was estimated at 6.7%, which is 0.4 percentage points (p.p.) lower than in the previous quarter and 1.0 p.p. higher than in the same quarter of 2020 and 0.3 p.p. higher than in the 2nd quarter of 2019.”

INE also highlighted that the unemployed population, “estimated at 345,700 people, decreased 4.0% (14,400) from the previous quarter and increased 24.2% (67,300) relative to the same quarter, the first covered by a declaration of a state of emergency.”
