International passengers will start paying a carbon tax of two euros in 2021
International passengers entering or leaving Portugal by plane or cruise will have to pay a carbon tax of two euros from July onwards.
International passengers arriving or departing from Portugal on flights or cruise ships will have to pay a carbon tax as of July 1 2021, amounting to two euros, according to Público newspaper.
This measure is foreseen in the State Budget for 2021 and the revenue of this tax reverts to the Environmental Fund. The first step for the implementation will happen already in January, when the government will have to proceed with its regulation.
The carbon tax for international passengers was proposed by the NAP and adopted with votes in favour of Left Bloc (BE) and the Socialist Party (PS). The aim is to create a tax on international passengers for carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.
