Tourism recovered in August compared to previous months

The numbers for tourism activity in August are in line with those published at the beginning of the month, with only a slight difference relative to the reduction in overnight stays.

Statistics Portugal (INE) confirmed on Thursday the recovery of tourism activity in August, despite a drop of 43.2% in guests and 47.1% in overnight stays compared to the same period last year.

The figures for tourism activity in August are in line with those published at the beginning of the month, in the rapid estimate, with only a slight difference relative to the reduction in overnight stays (47.2% in the initial estimate), representing a recovery of activity strongly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, after the 63.8% and 67.8% drops in July.

The tourist accommodation sector recorded 1.9 million guests and 5.1 million overnight stays in August, INE also confirmed.

According to the INE, overnight stays by residents fell by 2.1% (-29.4% in July) and those by non-residents by 72.0% (-84.7% the previous month).

Total income fell by 48.9% (after falling by 69.8% in July) to €326.5 million.

Income from rooms was €258.5 million, down 49.2% (-69.8% in the previous month), according to the August information updated today.

In August, the domestic market (with a weight of 66%) contributed 3.4 million overnight stays, a decrease of 2.1% (-29.4% in July).

Overnight stays by foreigners fell 72% (-84.7% in the previous month) and totalled 1.7 million.

In the first eight months of the year as a whole, there was a 62.5% decrease in total overnight stays, resulting from variations of -37.1% for residents and -73.6% for non-residents, INE said.
