Guterres: United Nation new Secretary-General

Former Portuguese prime minister António Guterres was appointed the favorite to become the new UN secretary-general.

The United Nations Security Council announced there were 13 votes in favor of António Guterres and two abstentions, one of them being from one of the five permanent members from the Security Council with the right of veto.

The Council will approve today a formal voting to officially appoint António Guterres for the UN General Assembly as Ban Ki-moon’s successor.

While in Rome meeting the Italian President Sergio Mattarella, the current secretary-general stated he knew Guterres very well, while adding: “I consider him to be an excellent choice”. Portuguese political parties unite in rejoice at the decision.

The new secretary-general will enter into office on the first of January of 2017.
