Job centres see registered unemployed fall 14.2% in November YoY

According to data released by IEFP, in November there were 7,598 more unemployed registered than in the previous month and 49,161 less than in November 2021.

The number of unemployed registered at job centres in Portugal increased by 2.6% in November, compared to October to 296,723, but was 14.2% lower than in November last year, the IEFP said on Tuesday.

According to data released by the Institute of Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP), in November there were 7,598 more unemployed registered than in the previous month and 49,161 less than in November 2021.

Throughout the month of November, 54,348 unemployed registered with employment services across the country, 7,206 more (+15.3%) than in the same month of 2021 and 3,768 (+7.4%) than in October.

According to the institute, “the groups that contributed most to the decrease in unemployment, compared to the same month in 2021, in absolute terms, were those aged 25 or over (-44,018), those seeking new employment (-45,681) and those registered for 12 months or more (-50,516).”

As for youth unemployment (people under the age of 25), there was a 1.2% increase in November (+380 young people) and a 13.5% reduction (-5,143 young people) in comparison to the same period the previous year.

At the regional level, in November, unemployment recorded in the country, in homologous terms, decreased in all the regions, especially in the autonomous region of Madeira (-33.3%) and the Algarve region (-18.0%).

In relation to the previous month, the regions were divided between decreases (three) and increases (four) in unemployment, with the largest variation in the Algarve region (+62.7%).
