French investment in Portugal triples in 2021
France was the largest foreign investor in Portugal in 2021 and the Luso-French Chamber of Commerce and Industry expects this dynamic to continue in 2022.
Investment by French companies in Portugal tripled last year compared to 2020 (over €400 million that year), reaching €1,207 million by September. This figure puts France as the largest foreign investor in Portugal last year, according to the president of the Luso-French Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCILF), quoted by Jornal de Negócios this Friday.
This boost achieved in 2021 brings the amount of cumulative investment by French companies in Portugal to €13 billion, leaving France in the fourth position. “2020 was already exceptional, but we were not in first place,” says Fabrice Lachize, president of CCILF, noting that there are more than 700 French companies operating in national territory, accounting for more than 60,000 jobs.
For 2022 there are more investment intentions by French companies in sectors linked to scientific research, biotechnology, the sea economy, as well as industry and construction. “2022 will be a very dynamic year for French investment,” anticipates Fabrice Lachize, president of the CCILF, even predicting that this will continue into 2023 and 2024.
