Rents per square metre rise 0.1% in December, up 1.9% YoY

According to the highlight of the INE's CPI, in December "all regions showed positive year-on-year changes in housing rents, with the Algarve registering the most intense increases (2.2%)."

Rent per square metre for homes in Portugal was in December up 1.9% on the same month of 2020, the same percentage increase as seen in November, for an average change of 1.8% in 2021, according to figures released by the National Statistics Institute (INE) on Wednesday.

According to the highlight of the INE’s Consumer Price Index (CPI), in December “all regions showed positive year-on-year changes in housing rents, with the Algarve registering the most intense increase (2.2%).”

The average rent per square metre rose 0.1% in December, or 0.1 of a percentage point than it had in November.

The region with the highest positive month-on-month variation was the Algarve, at 0.3%. No region saw a drop in average rental value.

The average annual increase in housing rents per square metre of usable area of 1.8% compared with a rise of 2.6% in 2020.

The region with the highest average variation was Lisbon, at 1.9%, but all other regions also saw increases.
