Ricardo Salgado charged in new case linked to the BES/GES universe

The former head of BES, Ricardo Salgado, is being accused of allegedly corrupting a former vice-president of the Bank of Brasil.

Portugal’s Public Prosecutor brought charges against eight defendants in a new case associated with the BES/GES universe, among which is Ricardo Salgado. The former leader of BES is being accused of allegedly having corrupted a former vice president of the Bank of Brazil, according to Observador.

The indictment concerns payments made by offshore Espírito Santo Enterprises of around two million euros to Allan Simões Toledo, a former Brazilian banker who is linked to Lula da Silva’s PT. According to the prosecution accusation, These payments were made on Salgado’s orders for the former Brazilian banker, allegedly, to exert his influence as director of the Bank of Brazil to get approval for a credit line of about $200 million to finance BES.

a statement, the Central Department of Investigation and Prosecution (DCIAP) stresses that filed charges against a law firm and seven individuals, including elements of financial entities of the Espírito Santo Group (GES), an element of wealth management (GESTAR/ICG) and two lawyers.

DCIAP also mentioned that at stake are crimes of active corruption with damage to international trade, laundering, passive corruption in the private sector and document forgery that took place between 2011 and 2014. These crimes represented benefits worth more than €12.2 million.
