Consumption 84% of EU average in 2020; country ranked 15th

The table of actual individual consumption in the EU is headed by Luxembourg (whose level also fell slightly, from 147% of the EU average in 2019), followed by Germany (124%) and Denmark (122%).

Actual individual consumption in Portugal last year was 84% of the European Union average, down from a figure of 86% in 2019, and ranked 15th in a table that is headed by Luxembourg (145% of the average), according to the EU’s statistical office, Eurostat.

According to the release issued on Wednesday, Portugal’s per capita gross domestic product last year was 76% of the EU average, also down from 79% in 2019, placing the country 19th out of the 27 member states.

The table of actual individual consumption – based on revised purchasing power parities – is headed by Luxembourg (whose level also fell slightly, from 147% of the EU average in 2019), followed by Germany (124%) and Denmark (122%).

Bulgaria is at the bottom of the table with per capita consumption 61% of the EU average, followed by Croatia, Latvia and Hungary (all on 70%).

Luxembourg also tops the table for GDP per capita, with its level increasing to 263% last year from 254% in 2019. It is followed by Ireland (209%) and Denmark (135%).

Bulgaria (55%, albeit up from 53% in 2019), Greece (62%) and Croatia (64%) are at the bottom of the table.
