Galp will announce a joint venture with Swedish Northvolt to build a lithium conversion plant in Portugal

According to a note from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action, Galp will announce on Tuesday a partnership with Northvolt to build a lithium refinery in the national territory.

After one year of negotiations, Galp will finally announce on Tuesday a joint venture with Sweden’s Northvolt to build a lithium conversion plant in Portugal, a note from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action reveals.

According to MAAC’s agenda note, Minister João Pedro Matos Fernandes, will participate “in the presentation event of the partnership announcement between GALP and Northvolt”, being also present, the Secretary of State for Energy, João Galamba.

According to the project Agenda CVB – Lithium Batteries Value Chain, submitted by Petrogal to the PRR funds and the mobilizing agendas of the Ministry of Economy, with a total investment of €980 million, it is led by Galp, but includes many other companies.

These include Savannah Lithium (€123.7 million) and Aurora Lithium (€387 million), which was formed by the Swedes of Northvolt and the Canadians of Nemaska Lithium.
