Portugal requires EU digital certificate at the border
To enter Portugal through its land borders, it is now necessary to be vaccinated or to present a negative Covid test.
This evening the new containment measures decreed last Thursday come into effect, to which the government has decided to add a new one regarding land borders. So, from midnight this Wednesday, anyone entering Portugal via a land border, regardless of their country of origin, will have to present the EU digital certificate – to be vaccinated, recovered from the disease or have a negative test result.
Land borders will remain open, but with restrictions. According to a statement sent out Tuesday by the Ministry of Internal Administration, “all citizens from countries outside the European Union (EU) and countries considered at risk level red or dark red” who do not have an EU Covid digital certificate in the modalities of test or recovery must present a negative Covid test.”
This test can be PCR and performed in the last 72 hours or rapid antigen test performed in the last 48 hours, says the Government document. In this case, for those travelling from countries outside the EU or considered at risk, being vaccinated is not valid to enter Portugal.
For citizens from EU countries considered to be at low or moderate risk, the rules are the same. They “must hold a Covid digital certificate in the modalities of vaccination, test or recovery”.
Cross-border workers – who carry out their professional activity up to 30 kilometres from the border – and workers in essential services (such as freight and passenger transport, emergency and rescue, security and emergency services) “must present the digital certificate in any of the three modalities”.
