Central bank. Family borrowing back up in May

According to the BdP, bank loans to individuals amounted to €122.188 billion at the end of last May, up from €121.748 billion the previous month and €118.834 billion in May 2020.

Total loans to households increased again in May, to just under €122 billion, according to data released today by the Bando de Portugal (BdP).

In households, housing loans stand out, which continued the upward trajectory recorded since December 2019, adding up to €96.666 billion, which compares with €96.291 billion in April and €93.459 billion year-on-year.

In May, the annual rate of change in loans to individuals for housing purposes was 3.5%, reflecting an increase of 0.2 percentage points in April.

As for consumer loans, the annual rate of change rose 0.7 percentage points over the previous month to 1.0%. The total amount of consumer credit stood at €18.921 billion, up from €18.55 billion in April and €18.861 billion in May 2020.
