Portugal: Covid-19 claims another 95 lives, 5,080 new coronavirus cases in last 24 hours
The number of people infected with coronavirus continues to increase and, in the last 24 hours, there have been 5,080 new cases.
Portugal on Friday counted 95 Covid-19 deaths, a new maximum, in 24 hours and 5,080 new coronavirus infections, according to the national health authority (DGS).
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Portugal has registered 5,373 deaths and 340,287 cases of infection with the new coronavirus, and today 71,266 are active, 885 more than on Thursday.
3,230 people are hospitalized, 74 fewer than the previous day, of which 507 are in intensive care, two fewer than on Thursday.
Of the 95 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, 41 occurred in the northern region, 32 in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, 16 in the central region, two in Alentejo, two more in the Algarve, one in the Azores and one in Madeira.
The health authorities have 74,894 contacts under surveillance, 739 fewer than on Thursday, with a further 4,100 patients recovered, totalling 263,648 since the outbreak.
According to the DGS bulletin, the northern region has the highest number of new infections by SARS-CoV-2 (2,395), totaling 178,378 cases and 2,578 deaths since March.
In the region of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley another 1,618 new cases have been reported, with 110,635 infections and 1,863 deaths so far.
In the Centre region there are 787 more cases in a total of 35,358, and 713 deaths since March.
In Alentejo, another 193 cases have been reported, totalling 7,613 cases and 138 deaths since the epidemic began in Portugal.
The Algarve region has today reported 66 new infections, totalling 6,015 cases and 58 deaths.
In the Azores 16 new cases have been registered in the last 24 hours, and one death, now totalling 1,270 detected infections and 20 dead.
Madeira has registered five new cases and one death in a total of 1,018 infections and three deaths since March.
The confirmed cases are spread over all age groups, with the highest number of infections being recorded between 20 and 59 years old.
The new coronavirus has already infected at least 152,955 men and 187,198 women in Portugal, according to DGS data, 134 cases of unknown sex are under investigation as these data are not provided automatically.
Of the total number of fatalities, 2,816 were men and 2,557 women.
The highest number of deaths continues to be concentrated in people over 80 years of age.
