Foreigners who want to live in Portugal temporarily can stay in the country for two years, one more than was allowed until now.

The government wants to extend the time given to foreigners who want to live temporarily in Portugal. If until now a Temporary residence permit of one year was granted, next year whoever requests this permit can stay in Portugal for two years. This change is included in the proposed State Budget for 2021 to which ECO had access.

“In 2021, the temporary residence permit provided for in no. 1 of article 75 of Law no. 23/2007, of July 4, in its current wording, is valid for a period of two years from the date of issuance of the respective title and renewable for successive periods of three years,” according to the document that will be delivered this Monday in Parliament.

The current law foresees that this authorization has a duration of only one year and may be renewable for successive periods of two years. The temporary residence permit allows foreign citizens to live in Portugal for a limited period of time.
