Portugal exported 0.5% less to China, imports grew by 17.1%

Portugal exported less and imported more from China in the first nine months of the year. Compared to the same period of the previous year, trade between Lisbon and Beijing increased by 10.37%.

Portugal exported less and imported more from China in the first nine months of the year. Compared to the same period of the previous year, trade between Lisbon and Beijing increased by 10.37%.

In the first nine months of the year, Portugal exported products worth 1.71 billion dollars (1.54 billion euros) to China, down 0.5% on the same period in 2018.

Imports of Chinese products increased by 17.1% compared to the same period last year. Portugal imported from China goods worth 3.2 billion dollars (2.96 billion euros).

According to official data published on Forum Macau’s website, based on statistics from the Chinese Customs Services, trade between Lisbon and Beijing amounted to five billion dollars (4.51 billion euros) up to September, whereas in the same period last year it was 4.53 billion dollars (4.08 billion euros).

In 2018, Portugal exported to China products worth 2.24 billion dollars (1.99 billion euros), up 5.59% on the same period in 2017, and trade between Lisbon and Beijing amounted to 6 billion dollars (5.3 billion euros) last year, which corresponds to an increase of around 408 million dollars (364 million euros) compared to 2017.

Last year trade between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries stood at 147.35 billion dollars (131.5 billion euros) over the first three months of the year, an increase of 25.31%.
