Tekever has acquired Portuguese startup Cloudsweep, deepening its AI push as the defence technology group expands software and autonomous systems capabilities.

Portuguese autonomous systems company Tekever has acquired local startup Cloudsweep, stepping up its investment in artificial intelligence (AI) as it expands capabilities in software engineering and autonomous systems with relevance for Europe’s defence and security technology sector.

Tekever did not disclose the value of the deal. In a statement, the company described Cloudsweep as a Portuguese startup focused on applying AI to software development and said the acquisition fits its strategy of strengthening the domestic innovation ecosystem by investing in emerging technology companies, attracting and retaining highly qualified talent, and accelerating critical capabilities for Europe.

The company said the deal also builds on an internal technology shift already under way, with AI being used as a native part of its engineering processes to speed up the development of more sophisticated solutions for defence, security and monitoring. Tekever said Cloudsweep’s team and its work in applying AI to software development would gain international scale through the integration.

Tekever said the acquisition would support the development in Portugal of critical technologies used by governments and organisations across Europe. The company has more than 1,300 employees and operations in Portugal, the UK, France, Estonia, Ukraine and the US.
