The aim is also to design "a new railway section" that will connect the high-speed line "with the conventional line towards Tui", allowing the reordering of rail traffic in the Vigo area.

The Spanish government has awarded a study for Vigo’s southern exit, a high-speed rail section between the city and Valencia, part of the projected line that will link Galicia to Porto, according to a statement issued on Thursday.

According to a statement from Spain’s Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda consulted by Lusa today, the study “will assess the route alternatives to enable the Vigo-Urzáiz station as a crossing point, giving continuity to the high-speed Atlantic Axis to Portugal.”

According to the text, dated Wednesday, the study of the Vigo southern exit was awarded for €884,200 to the Prointec-Geoconsult group of companies “with an execution period of 18 months”.

“The award is a new step towards boosting rail connections between Spain and Portugal, in line with the commitment made by both countries at the 34th Luso-Spanish Summit held in Lanzarote last March,” the Spanish ministry said.

The entity led by the minister Raquel Sánchez Jiménez pointed out that “in this specific case, progress is being made on the high-speed link between Vigo and Porto”.

“The aim of this study is to develop alternative routes to give continuity to the high-speed Atlantic Axis towards Portugal, for which a new configuration of the Vigo-Urzáiz station will be defined as a passage,” the statement said.

The aim is also to design “a new railway section” that will connect the high-speed line “with the conventional line towards Tui”, which “will also allow the reordering of rail traffic in the Vigo area”.

The contract includes the provision of engineering services to carry out public information procedures and hearings with the administrations, analysis of complaints received and obtaining environmental authorisation until the final approval of the study.
