Airports handle record 12.87M passengers in Q1, up 54% on year ago

Passenger movements at Portugal’s airports in the first quarter totalled a record 12.87 million, or 54.3% more than in the same period of 2022, and 15.1% above the first quarter of 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, the National Statistics Institute (INE) reported on Friday.
Taking the month of March alone, there were 4.9 million passengers passing through Portugal’s airports, or 35.6% more than in the same month of 2022 and 13.8% more than in March 2019.
“Since the beginning of 2023, monthly passenger figures at national airports have always been higher than pre-pandemic levels,” states INE in its release.
In March of this year, it noted, an average of about 80,000 passengers was recorded as disembarking each day at national airports, 34.6% up on the 59,400 seen in March 2022 and 15.1% above the 69,500 of March 2019.
