Revenue from tourist activity rose by 21.3% vs 2019

This hike in revenue is explained by the increases seen in the tourist accommodation sector (guests and overnight stays) during the month of September.

September was a great month for national tourism. According to Statistics Portugal (INE), the total revenue from tourist activity climbed by 70.3% compared to September 2021 and by 21.3% when compared to the same month three years ago (pre-pandemic period). The tourist accommodation sector also saw increases during this month.

“The total revenue increased by 70.3% to €608.2 million, and the revenue from accommodation amounted to €469.2 million, increasing by 74.5%. Compared to September 2019, there were increases of 21.3% and 22.5% in total revenue and revenue from accommodation, respectively,” explained the statistics office.

This hike in revenue is explained by the increases seen in the tourist accommodation sector (guests and overnight stays) during the month of September.

“The tourist accommodation sector registered 2.9 million guests and 7.7 million overnight stays in September 2022, corresponding to increases of +41.3% and +37.4%, respectively,” INE stated, adding that, when compared with September, “there was growths of 0.2% and 0.7%, respectively.”

However, considering Portugal’s crown jewel regarding tourist activity, the Algarve registered “a reduction in overnight stays compared to 2019, mainly from non-residents (-16.4% for non-residents and -5.8% for residents).”

The revenue per available room (RevPar) was €78.0 in September, and the average daily rate (ADR) reached €115.6 (+62.6% and +26.5% compared to September 2021, respectively). Compared to the same month three years ago, RevPar increased by 17.7% and ADR grew by 18.9%.
