Vehicle output up 17.5% in year to date
Almost all (97.5%) of the vehicles manufactured in Portugal are destined for the external market, mainly Europe, with Germany, France, Italy and Spain standing out.
The number of cars leaving the factories in Portugal reached 179,725 between January and August, 17.5% more than in the same period of 2020, but 20.2% less than in 2019, revealed ACAP – Associação do Comércio Automóvel de Portugal.
In August, 3,209 motor vehicles were produced in Portugal, translating to falls of 78.6% compared to August 2020 and 76.6% compared to the same month in 2019, data that the association says mirror the “strong” impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on Portuguese factories.
Almost all (97.5%) of the vehicles manufactured in Portugal are destined for the external market, mainly Europe, which, in the first eight months of this year, was once again the leading market in exports of vehicles manufactured in Portugal (87.1%), with Germany (16.1%), France (14.2%), Italy (13.6%) and Spain (12.2%) standing out.
Regarding the assembly of motor vehicles in Portugal, only heavy passenger vehicles were assembled for the eighth consecutive month. In August, only three heavy vehicles were assembled, 76.9% less than in the same month of 2020.
The assembly of heavy vehicles fell 72.5%, between January and August, compared to the same period of 2020, representing 138 vehicles assembled in 2021.
In the first eight months, 25.4% of the vehicles assembled in Portugal were exported, representing 35 units, with Germany being the only destination of these vehicles, according to ACAP.
