"In the week ended on September 5, the daily economic indicator (DEI) and the corresponding biennial rate stabilized compared to the previous week," the central bank said in the weekly update.

The Portuguese economy began the month of September growing at a stable rate compared to the previous week, according to the Bank of Portugal’s daily indicator of economic activity (DEI).

“In the week ended on September 5, the daily economic indicator (DEI) and the corresponding biennial rate stabilized compared to the previous week,” the central bank said in the weekly update.

The previous week had registered a marked slowdown, even though the country had moved into a new stage of the deconfinement plan implemented by the Portuguese government. However, the situation stabilised at the start of this month.

On September 5, the last day for which the DEI was calculated, the year-on-year growth in the indicator was 5.2%. As for the weekly moving average, the latest figure is for September 2: a year-on-year increase of 2.9%.

Comparing with the average of the last two years (2019 and 2020), the daily indicator recorded a marginally positive rate of 0.1% on September 5 (-2% in the previous week), while the weekly moving average against the two-year accumulated on September 2 was -1.5% (-2.6% in the previous week).
