Despite being one of the main exporters of players, Portugal loses some places on the list in terms of revenue, being ninth, with $135.9 million, on a list led by Germany, with $462.7 million.

Portugal ranks second in the number of footballers transferred abroad, according to a report published on Tuesday by FIFA on the recently concluded transfer market.

In the document, FIFA highlighted that, despite a return to some normality, the number of transfers remained low this past summer market, roughly at the level of 2020, still a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In total, FIFA reveals there were 7,748 transfers, virtually the same number as in 2020 (7,771) after in the previous three years these had always been higher, culminating in 2019 with 9,092.

With Europe at the top of the various categories, Portugal enters the ‘top-10’ in several of them, most notably that of players transferred abroad, in which it is second, with 390, only behind dominant England (494), the leader in almost all parameters.

Despite being one of the main exporters of players, Portugal loses some places on the list in terms of revenue, being ninth, with $135.9 million (€113.7 million), on a list led by Germany, with $462.7 million (€389.8 million).

Portugal is also fourth in the category of incoming players (309) and eighth in the list of those who spend the most, with $75.4 million (€63.5 million).

FIFA’s investment in women’s football was also highlighted in the document, since the trend of increasing the number of clubs continues, which also leads to an increase in the number of transfers.
