The two companies will form a joint venture (each will hold 50% of it) to develop offshore wind energy projects in Spain and Portugal.

Acciona and SSE Renewables recently announced the signing of an exclusive agreement for the development of offshore wind energy projects in Spain and Portugal, with the possibility of also exploring joint opportunities in other markets.

The two companies will form a joint venture (each will hold 50% of it), which will combine Acciona’s experience as developer and operator of renewable installations in Spain and Portugal with SSE Renewables’ expertise in the development, construction and comprehensive management of offshore projects globally.

“This agreement with SSE Renewables will allow us to accelerate our entry into the offshore wind market, in which we see high potential,” said Rafael Mateo, CEO of Acciona’s Energy Division.

SSE Renewables already has 487 MW of offshore wind operations and a portfolio of projects under development (construction, operation and management) of 6 GW in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It is currently building the world’s largest offshore wind farm, Dogger Bank Wind Farm (with 3.6 GW) in the North Sea, in partnership with Equinor, as well as Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm, Offshore Seagreen (1.1 GW), in the Firth of Forth, in partnership with Total.

“Partnering with a leading renewable player in Spain and Portugal will allow us to put our offshore wind expertise to serve both countries’ goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. This agreement is an exponent of our strategy to generate a strong portfolio of wind projects in international markets,” concluded Jim Smith, CEO of SSE Renewables.
