Worst day of Covid-19 in Portugal: 219 more deaths and 14,647 new cases

The number of people infected with coronavirus continues to increase and, in the last 24 hours, there have been 14,647 new cases.

There are 14,647 new cases of coronavirus compared to Monday, bringing the total number of people infected with the disease to 581,605. 219 people have died in the last 24 hours, according to the latest report from the Directorate-General for Health (DGS). It was, so far, the day with the biggest increase in cases and deaths.

There are now 143,776 people (active cases) fighting the disease, 7,935 more than yesterday. Most new infections have been recorded in Lisbon and the Tagus Valley. Of the 14,647 new confirmed cases, 5,593 are located in this region (38.2%), followed by the North region, which reported 5,097 new infections (34.8%).

Even so, the North continues to be the region with the most cases so far (266,384 cases of Covid-19 and 3,866 deaths), followed by Lisbon and the Tagus Valley (197,311 cases and 3,430 deaths), the Centro region (78,953 cases and 1,539 deaths), the Alentejo (19,592 cases and 447 deaths) and the Algarve (13,356 cases and 132 deaths). In the islands, the Azores Archipelago have 3,093 cases and 22 deaths, while Madeira has 2,916 infected people and 29 fatalities.

Of the total number of people infected with the new coronavirus, most are undergoing treatment at home, with 5,493 inpatients, 681 of them in intensive care units. There are over 166,000 under the surveillance of the health authorities.

Since it was detected in Portugal at the beginning of March, the coronavirus has caused the death of 9,465 people, 219 of them in the last 24 hours.
