Portugal reports highest daily number of Covid cases

The number of people infected with coronavirus continues to increase and, in the last 24 hours, there have been 10,698 new cases.

There are 10,698 new cases of coronavirus compared to Wednesday, bringing the total number of people infected with the disease to 517,806. It is the second biggest daily increase in cases since the beginning of the pandemic. 148 people have died in the last 24 hours, according to the latest official report of the Directorate-General for Health (DGS).

Most of the new cases were registered in Lisbon and the Tagus Valley Region (4,071) and in the North (3,461). In the Centro Region, 2,128 cases were reported, in Alentejo 520, Algarve 400, Madeira 61 and Azores 57.

Of the total number of people infected with the new coronavirus, most are undergoing treatment at home, with 4,368 inpatients, 611 of them in intensive care units. There are over 138,000 under the surveillance of the health authorities.

Since it was detected in Portugal at the beginning of March, the coronavirus has caused the death of 8,384 people, 148 of them in the last 24 hours
