Almost 20% more couples both unemployed in September YoY

According to data released on Tuesday by the IEFP, the number of couples with both people registered in the employment centres increased by 19.2% in September.

The number of couples with both people registered in the employment centres increased by 19.2% in September compared to the same month in 2019, to 6,382, according to data released on Tuesday by the Institute for Employment and Professional Training (IEFP).

According to the IEFP, of the total number of unemployed married or unmarried couples, 12,764 (8.1%) are also registered as unemployed.

The number of couples in which both spouses are registered as unemployed at the end of September was 6,382, i.e. 19.2% more (equivalent to 1,030 couples) than in the same month, but 1.1% less (74 couples) than in the previous month.

Couples in this situation of double unemployment are entitled to an increase of 10% in the amount of unemployment benefit they are receiving when they have dependents.

The IEFP began to publish statistical information on couples with both unemployed people in November 2010, when there were 2,862 such situations.

According to the IEFP, at the end of September, the number of unemployed registered in job centres increased by 36.1% year-on-year in September and by 0.2% compared to August.
