Car sales drop more than 41% until August

According to data from the Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP), the automobile market in Portugal fell 41.2% between January and August compared to last year.

The automobile market in Portugal fell 41.2% between January and August compared to the same period in 2019, with 110,764 new vehicles coming on the roads, according to data from the Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP).

In August, the Portuguese automobile market fell 8.6% to 14,662 vehicles.

By category, in August, 12,417 light passenger cars were registered, the equivalent to a drop of 0.1% compared to the same month of the previous year.

In the first eight months of 2020, there were 92,474 light passenger vehicles registered, 42% less than in the same period of the previous year.

In turn, the light goods market dropped 40.5% in August, compared to the same month in 2019, to 1,960 registered units.

Between January and August, this market represented 16,111 units, a fall of 36.7% compared with the first eight months of 2019.

The heavy vehicle market, which encompasses both passenger and goods vehicles, fell by 7.2% in August, with 285 vehicles sold.

In the accumulated period of reference, the registrations of this market stood at 2,179 units, the equivalent to a loss of 39.5% in relation to what was registered between January and August 2019.
