Portugal has an intensive care occupation rate of 54%, the Secretary of State for health said on Monday, adding that 66 ventilators that arrived in Portugal on Sunday will be ‘immediately’ distributed throughout the country.

At the daily press conference held at the Health Department (DGS) to present Covid-19 information, António Lacerda Sales said that 66 ventilators arrived in Portugal on Sunday from China and will be ‘immediately distributed throughout the country.’

According to him, 40 ventilators will go to the north and centre region and the remaining 23 to units in Lisbon and The Tagus Valley, Alentejo and Algarve.

He added that 63 of the ventilators were acquired by the health authorities and the other three by the local authorities.

“Portugal has an intensive care unit occupation rate of 54%,” the Secretary of State said.

These 66 ventilators are part of the 508 that Portugal bought from China to strengthen the capacity of the National Health Service in intensive care.

According to data released on Monday by the DGS, Portugal has registered 735 deaths associated with Covid-19, 21 more than on Sunday, and 20,863 infected (657 more).

Of the total number of infected people, the vast majority are recovering at home, totalling 19,655, 692 more than on Sunday (3.6%).

The data showed that 1,208 are hospitalised, 35 less than on Saturday (-2.8%), and 215 are in Intensive Care Units, nine less, which represents a decrease of 4%.
