Unemployed registered at employment centres drops 19.1%

The number of unemployed people increased by 2.3% this month in comparison to July, according to the IEFP's monthly statistics on the Portuguese job market.

There were 338,147 unemployed people in Portugal registered at employment centres in August, a 19.1% drop compared to the same month in 2017, and a rise of 2.3% compared to July.

The figures were revealed on Wednesday by Portugal’s Professional Job and Training Institute (IEFP), in its monthly analysis on the job market.

Figures released by Eurostat on 31 August showed that Portugal’s unemployment rate in July was 6.8%, down from 8.9% a year earlier.

The unemployment rate in the eurozone in July, meanwhile, stood at 6.8% and in the European Union as a whole at 8.2%.

Also, the long-term unemployment has decreased significantly, on the year-on-year comparison and in the monthly evolution, standing at 160 thousand people, the lowest value reached since 2009.
