Chinese ambassador Cui Min, spoke this Thursday at a conference in Luanda noting the debt is a normal situation for developing countries like Angola, who need to sustain their projects.

China’s ambassador to Luanda, Cui Aimin, said on Thursday that Angola’s debt to his country was “controllable, sustainable and not very bad”, adding that this was a bilateral matter without saying how much Angola owed China at the moment.

The Chinese ambassador was speaking in Luanda today at a press conference about the Beijing Summit for the China-Africa Cooperation Forum, which is being held on 3 and 4 September.

Ambassador Cui Aimin added that debt is a normal situation in developing countries that need to sustain their projects, but that the debt, in this case, was “controllable and sustainable” for both countries.

The Portuguese news agency Lusa published a text in May saying that Angola’s accumulated bilateral and trade debt to China in 2017 was worth $21.5 billion (€18.6 billion), according to official Angolan government figures.
