Portugal's President highlighted the importance of the economic relationship with Germany and the presence of the German investment in Portugal. Marcelo has gathered with his German homologous.

This Thursday, the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, met his German homologous, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, taking the opportunity to highlight the importance of the economic relationship between both countries, as well as the importance of German investment in Portugal. Without specially referring to Autoeuropa, Volkswagen factory in Palmela, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa advocated for the need to maintain medium and long term relationships between both European States.

“Generically speaking, our economic relationship with Germany is very important for Portugal and for the Portuguese”, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa stated, adding that “the presence of German investment is very important”, advocating for “medium and long term relationships, based on mutual trust”.

Without specifically referring to the case of Autoeuropa, the Portuguese President ended up giving a signal on the subject. “Everything that can be done to reinforce that mutual trust is good for both countries, but it is ultimately good for the Portuguese”.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier did not say whether or not Autoeuropa would continue producing in Portugal. Since the new T-Roc model was introduced in Palmela, workers are refusing the administration’s proposals about work schedules, which include mandatory work on Saturdays, and about salary increases for 2018.

The German President is in Portugal for a two-days visit, which will end in Oporto, this Friday.
