Santana Lopes, former Portuguese prime minister and current ombudsman of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa will have to leave office in order to head the Social Democratic Party (PSD).

Pedro Santana Lopes has payed a visit to the Portuguese President and prime minister. The announcement of his decision to apply for the leadership of PSD is not yet official, but Expresso says it has been taken.

Pedro Santana Lopes will face Rui Rio — who is formalizing his candidacy this Wednesday — on the January 13 elections for the PSD leadership. According to Expresso, Santana Lopes is said to have started making invitations for his campaign.

If he follows through with his candidacy for the party, he will have to abandon his position in Lisbon’s Santa Casa da Misericórdia, because both offices are incompatible.

After Santana Lopes’ visit to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the President avoided disclosing what both spoke of and assured they spoke of his position as ombudsman in Santa Casa, Portuguese news agency Lusa stated.
