Rui Rio, former mayor in Oporto, will present his application for the leadership of PSD. The party's National Council will meet this Monday to decide when will the new president be elected.

Former Oporto mayor Rui Rio will present his application for the leadership of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) this Wednesday in a hotel in Aveiro, according to a note sent to the newsrooms.

“Rui Rio will publicly present his application for the presidency of the Social Democratic Party next Wednesday, on October 11, and — as defined by the candidate –, the presentation will not take place neither in Oporto, nor in Lisbon”, the note states.

PSD’s National Council will meet this Monday to schedule the upcoming direct elections for the presidency of the party and of the Congress which will elect new committees, since Passos Coelho leadership is coming to an end. The meeting will be held in Lisbon, at 9 p.m.; so far, no one else has publicly applied for PSD’s leadership — but several have, in fact, walked away from the race (such as Luís Montenegro, Paulo Rangel and Pedro Duarte).

As for the former Portuguese prime minister Pedro Santana Lopes, he told the Portuguese TV channel SIC he is thinking about the possibility of applying for the position and has written an article in the Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã disclosing he is working on a programme for PSD.
