In the first quarter of 2017, the Portuguese hotel business had its strongest performance in the past 10 years, according to the first APH Hotel Snapshot disclosed by the Portuguese Hotels Association (APH). In the first thee months of 2017, the RevPAR (average available room price) increased 13% in an homologous comparison and 22% in comparison to the first quarter of 2007.

Over the first quarter of 2017, Portugal had a total of 8.8 million overnight stays in tourism enterprises, out of which 86% were in hotels, apartment hotels and hostels. The APH noticed these results weren’t influenced by Easter, “which occurred in April”. The number of guests was 3.4 million (+6.4% when making an homologous comparison and +48% in comparison to the first quarter of 2007).

This analysis also showed a 18% increase in the number of employees in the hospitality business to a total of 62 thousand people. This number should increase, considering the 41 new hotels Portugal should open by the end of the year; by now, 11 new hotels have allready opened for business.
